S&P Dow Jones Completes First Tokenized Index-Referenced OTC Swap on Canton Network

S&P Dow Jones Indices, Kaiko, and Derivnex announced the completion of the first over-the-counter swap transaction on the Canton Network distributed ledger. DRW and Marex executed a total return swap on Derivnex, referencing the iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index tokenized by Kaiko on Canton. This also marks the first instance of an OTC derivative referencing a fully tokenized index. By encoding trade terms into smart contracts and managing valuations and other processes through a shared synchronized record, the transaction eliminates the need for multiple systems and reconciliation work traditionally required. In parallel, Ripple's custody service has begun supporting Canton, advancing the development of digital asset infrastructure for institutional investors.

US index giant S&P Dow Jones Indices, digital asset data provider Kaiko, and Derivnex, which operates an OTC derivatives platform for institutional investors, announced on the 13th that the first OTC swap transaction has been completed on the Canton distributed ledger network. It also represents the first instance of an over-the-counter (OTC) derivative referencing a fully tokenized index.

The transaction was a total return swap executed on Derivnex by US proprietary trading firm DRW and UK financial services company Marex, referencing the iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index that Kaiko tokenized on Canton. OTC swaps are contracts in which parties negotiate terms individually without going through an exchange, allowing them to obtain and manage exposure to the price movements of an index or asset without directly holding it.

Traditionally, managing such transactions over their lifecycle required multiple systems, bilateral communication, and ongoing reconciliation. Derivnex designed the swap to be represented on Canton as a smart contract incorporating the trade terms, enabling management of valuations and other processes through a shared synchronized record. Kaiko distributed signed official index values, which Derivnex used for position valuation throughout the trade's duration.

Tokenization Design and Intellectual Property Handling

For the index tokenization, Kaiko combined index data, access permissions, and usage rules into the token. The design preserves S&P Dow Jones Indices' licensing and intellectual property management while allowing only authorized participants to use the index data in digital finance operations.

Derivnex adopted the Common Domain Model (CDM) to represent derivatives transactions and lifecycle events in a standardized digital format, enabling counterparties to coordinate operations while maintaining confidentiality. Through a unified blockchain-based dashboard built on International Swaps and Derivatives Association (ISDA) standards, both parties were able to coordinate the entire derivatives lifecycle, eliminating manual reconciliation work.

Derivnex CEO George Harrington expressed the view that a system using a common digital representation from trade confirmation through the entire lifecycle can function in real institutional markets. Going forward, positions managed on Derivnex are expected to be connected to digital cash and collateral on Canton, adding functionality to move margin, collateral, and contractual payments on the same infrastructure.

DRW founder and CEO Don Wilson noted that uncleared OTC derivatives represent a massive market yet still carry cumbersome, bespoke operational workflows. He stated that this transaction enables Marex and DRW to operate on the same immutable record and streamline their flows.

Canton's Positioning and Ripple Integration

Canton Network is a permissioned blockchain infrastructure designed for institutional investors, aiming to become core infrastructure for traditional capital markets. Unlike public blockchains, it limits transaction visibility to relevant parties, allowing financial institutions to build trading pathways without exposing confidential information on public networks.

Coinciding with the launch of S&P Dow Jones' on-chain activity, digital asset infrastructure firm Ripple introduced support for the Canton blockchain in early October as part of the latest update to its custody service, "Ripple Custody." This enables major banks and financial institutions to utilize custody and settlement functionality for Canton Coin (CC) tokens—Canton's native asset—and CIP-56 digital securities.

Ripple's "bring your own validator" model allows institutions to retain signing keys internally and maintain full control over their vaults. Traditional banks can directly manage positions on Canton without exposing private keys externally. However, the relationship between Canton and Ripple remains purely technical; Canton does not depend on Ripple's ecosystem, and XRP tokens, the XRPL ledger, or the RLUSD stablecoin are not used in any part of Canton's settlement process.

Despite the technical progress, some in the crypto asset community remain skeptical of Canton's permissioned, institution-only architecture, criticizing it for not embodying the open and decentralized principles typically associated with blockchain.

On the other hand, Canton has become an operationally viable platform for major Wall Street participants, with Ripple serving as a custody gateway. As the debate over the balance between decentralization and security continues, Canton is solidifying its position as the blockchain foundation for the digitalization of large-scale traditional finance.
