Virtu, Tradeweb Complete First On-Chain Repo Using Marshall Islands Digital Sovereign Bond as Collateral
Virtu Financial, M1X Global, and Tradeweb have completed an on-chain repurchase agreement (repo) transaction on the Canton Network using the Republic of the Marshall Islands' digital sovereign bond, USDM1, as collateral. This marks the first instance of a sovereign digital bond serving as collateral with the entire process—from trade execution to settlement—conducted on-chain. USDM1 is pegged 1:1 to short-term U.S. Treasury bills and is structured as a fully collateralized sovereign debt instrument under New York State law. The repo sale-to-repurchase cycle was completed in under 10 minutes, with institutional custody handled by Anchorage Digital, BitGo, and tZERO. The Canton Network has recently seen a flurry of institutional finance experiments, including the launch of a cross-chain swap engine and stablecoin issuance.

Virtu Financial and Tradeweb have completed an on-chain repurchase agreement (repo) transaction using digital sovereign bonds issued by the Republic of the Marshall Islands as collateral. This marks the first time a sovereign digital bond has been used as collateral with the entire process—from trade execution to settlement—conducted on-chain.
According to cryptocurrency media outlet CoinTelegraph on the 27th (local time), Virtu Financial, M1X Global, and Tradeweb completed the full repo transaction cycle on the Canton Network. The collateral used was 'USDM1,' a dollar-denominated sovereign bond issued on-chain by the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
USDM1 is pegged 1:1 to short-term U.S. Treasury bills and is structured as a fully collateralized sovereign debt obligation under New York State law. It is designed to continue paying coupons even while being used as collateral.
The three firms stated that this transaction represents "the first repo transaction combining sovereign collateral with fully on-chain atomic settlement." Regulated institutions executed the trade on the Tradeweb platform, with the entire repo sale-to-repurchase cycle completed in under 10 minutes.
Expansion into Collateral Assets for Institutional Financial Markets
This transaction is notable in that tokenized sovereign debt was not merely issued and circulated, but actively deployed as a collateral asset in institutional financial markets. However, as a single transaction, whether it will scale across the broader institutional repo market remains to be seen.
Institutional custody for USDM1 is handled by Anchorage Digital, BitGo, and tZERO. The instrument can be traded through Tradeweb's electronic trading platform.
The Canton Network is an institutional-grade blockchain network designed for regulated financial transactions and tokenized asset utilization. It incorporates privacy and permissioning features tailored for regulated trading environments.
Canton Network Sees Wave of Institutional Experiments
This repo transaction follows Tradeweb's July facilitation of a real-time transfer of Franklin Templeton's tokenized U.S. Treasury fund shares to Virtu Financial on the Canton Network, which was settled using USDCx.
Institutional finance experiments leveraging the Canton Network have been accelerating recently. FalconX and Interstice launched a cross-chain swap engine connecting Canton with Ethereum, Solana, and Robinhood Chain, while World Liberty Financial issued its own stablecoin, USD1, on the Canton Network.
Digital Asset and the American Idea Foundation, founded by former U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan, also announced plans this month to pursue a government benefits disbursement pilot using the Canton Network across three U.S. states in 2027.
Digital Asset recently raised $355 million (approximately 490 billion won) in an investment round led by a16z, underscoring growing venture capital interest in Wall Street blockchain infrastructure.
This transaction serves as a test case for whether tokenized government bonds can evolve beyond simple investment products into core infrastructure for inter-institutional funding. The extent to which on-chain settlement can reduce settlement delays and operational costs in the existing repo market will likely be the key variable determining future adoption.
